Swiss Contribution

Swiss Climate Inc. leads project coordination and reporting, providing expertise in climate consulting, plastic credit market development, and business model design. The Swiss contribution includes know-how transfer through selected industry and science partners, particularly the Institute for Environmental and Process Engineering (UMTEC) of OST University of Applied Sciences. Swiss experts provide technical advice on plastic waste management, circular economy principles, and AI-powered sorting technologies, while supporting the development of a plastic crediting scheme based on Swiss experience in carbon markets.

Description

The project establishes sustainable plastic waste management practices in Nepal through a mechanical sorting facility processing 20 tons of mixed dry waste daily at Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s waste transfer station. It focuses on collecting low-value plastics (LVPs) and multi-layered plastics typically ignored by existing systems. The project includes three work packages: establishing a Material Recovery Facility, conducting stakeholder awareness campaigns, and developing a plastic credit market. With annual processing of 3,150 tons of waste, it expects to recover 1,400 tons of plastic waste, avoid 2,334 tons of CO2eq emissions, and generate revenue through recyclable materials, plastic credits, and refuse-derived fuel supply to cement industries. The pilot project prepares for a potential rollout phase incorporating AI-powered autonomous sorting systems to double processing capacity and enhance resource recovery efficiency.
