ETH Zurich’s spin-off Openversum leverages Swiss membrane technology and a digitized microfranchise distribution system to bring sustainable water purification solutions to underserved communities.
Description
In this project, Openversum is implementing a scalable micro-franchise model that provides local entrepreneurs, especially women, with the tools and know-how to assemble, sell and maintain state-of-the-art drinking water filters in emerging regions.
Openversum is setting up a local production line with a local partner in Medellín, Colombia, to be able to produce higher quantities and thus reduce production costs. Combining Swiss research with Colombian practical knowledge, Openversum is making clean water accessible and creating jobs. Openversum furthermore developed a digital platform that provides entrepreneurs with the relevant knowledge about water issues, the proper use of the water filters and tools for business success.
Results
Openversum has set up a production line in Colombia and can now produce the water filters in larger quantities. At the same time, thanks in part to the REPIC grant, Openversum was able to secure key investments for the implementation of commercialisation.
