A great deal of specialized know-how and experience has resulted from successful Minergie certifications over the last 20 years. The “Verein Minergie” (Minergie Association) is managing this project and is responsible for setting up the Chilean Minergie organisation. Binz Energie an Bau GmbH and EBP are involved in the technical work and contribute Swiss expertise.
Chilean buildings generally have both low energy efficiency and high CO2 emissions. New technologies are less widespread than in Switzerland, although are on the increase. Minergie is a proven Swiss building standard for new and renovated buildings. Its advantages are simplicity, communicability, as well as the link to comfort and are also showing promise for success in Chile.
The standard was adapted to the Chilean context. A first residential building (see photo above) is fully certified. Another much larger one has already received pre-certification. The Minergie website there has been up and running since the end of 2020 and further marketing activities are underway. Further expansion (to Mexico and Colombia, in particular) is in the works.
The certified building is heated by a heat pump which in turn obtains part of its needed electricity from a PV system. Approximately 13,000 kWh of renewable energy is produced. This is a savings of about 12 tonnes CO2 emissions per year, compared to the standard electricity mix.
