Swiss Contribution

Medair, a Swiss humanitarian NGO present in Madagascar since 2002, brings its technical and operational expertise in natural disaster management, particularly through its experience in building cyclone-resistant shelters. The collaboration with the Shelter/Housing cluster enables Medair to share its expertise developed in other contexts, such as South Sudan, while adapting it to Madagascar’s local specificities.

Description

The project aims to develop and deploy an innovative shelter kit for communities affected by cyclones and floods in Madagascar’s Analanjirofo region. This kit, primarily composed of local bamboo and rubber ropes made from recycled tires, can be used both as emergency shelter and permanent roof structure. The initiative includes three main components: creating a local supply chain for materials, raising awareness among humanitarian actors about this technical solution, and strengthening community capacities for better emergency response. The project plans to distribute 450 kits that will benefit approximately 2,250 people, while creating local jobs, particularly for women who will participate in manufacturing rubber ropes.
