Swiss Contribution

The Swiss company Maji UX Studio specializes in user-centered digital solutions and software development. It is contributing its expertise to the creation of an open digital Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (dMRV) system for this project. This system is designed to optimize biochar production and ensure transparency and traceability for the certification of carbon credits. The dMRV system will be developed as an open-source project, meaning it will be publicly available for other biochar producers to use.

In addition, composting expert Jacques Fuchs from the Swiss Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) contributes to the analysis of organic waste and the development of biochar fertilizer formulations tailored to the agricultural conditions in Tanzania.

Description

This project, a collaboration between the Swiss company Maji UX Studio and its local Tanzanian partner Dark Earth Carbon (DEC), is focused on scaling up industrial biochar production in Tanzania. The goal is to convert agricultural and forestry waste into high-quality biochar fertilizer and carbon credits.

Upstream, waste wood and agricultural waste from smallholder farmers are used as raw materials for the production of biochar, creating an additional source of income for them. Downstream, the produced biochar is mixed with compost to form a compound fertilizer and applied to the farmers’ fields to improve soil health and increase crop yields. To ensure the correct and efficient use of the fertilizer, training sessions are conducted for the farmers.

The partnership combines Swiss know-how with local expertise to not only improve soil health, increase crop yields, and create jobs, but also to contribute to the fight against climate change.
