gebana is a Swiss fair-trade company that was founded in 1998. In close cooperation with family farmers, gebana promotes sustainable production, transformation, and trade of fresh and dry produce. For this project in Burkina Faso, gebana is partnering with Generation Carbon and FiBL to promote industrial-scale pyrolysis technology and the use of biochar in agriculture.
Description
As part of its new processing factory in Burkina Faso, gebana aims to install locally manufactured pyrolysis units to optimise the processing of dried mangoes and cashew nuts. The manufacturing of industrial-scale pyrolysis units in Burkina Faso will strengthen the local know-how and enable replication by other actors. The biochar that is produced by the units will be composted together with organic waste from the factory. gebana will distribute this compost amongst farmers to improve their soil fertility and yields. The application of biochar to the soil and the associated carbon sequestration should enable the sale of carbon credits, contributing to the economic viability of the activities.
