Swiss Contribution

The HES-SO (University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland) develops algorithms for the analysis and prediction of energy consumption and production of renewable energies. It can build on sàrl’s considerable expertise; a Swiss company that specializes in solar panel installation and electric battery management. The Leclanché batteries used are specially designed for solar power (with approximately a 10-year duration; 5,000 charge/discharge cycles).


Although solar energy is available in Burkina Faso more than 2,800h/year, the country faces major energy challenges. Rural areas far from the urban electricity grid are particularly affected, with only about 2% having access to electricity. The project is a part of this dynamic, with the installation of a  15 kWp power station (microgrid), combined with a 6 kW and 6kWh Lithium-ion battery in order to connect a village’s public buildings and homes. The installation will have the characteristic of being managed by a specially developed smart box, as well as allowing to optimize the battery’s charge/discharge based on the production and consumption forecasting algorithms, and ensuring reliable supply by avoiding the use of diesel units as a power backup. In addition to providing electricity for local development and encouraging awareness of renewable energies, the project will generate economic and social activity for the local population’s benefit.
