Swiss Contribution

Urs Hagnauer has led the VSBK Project in Nepal over the last 7 years. Hanspeter Hösli is the project development cooperation partner at South Pole Carbon Asset Management, Zürich. Mr. Hösli has a broad international experience, as well as in Nepal, where he was an administrator for almost 3 years and responsible for approximately 20 projects.

Description

Under this study, the Vertical Shaft Brick Kiln (VSBK) facilities (firing ovens in the brick industry) are verified and the corresponding data are collected, then their quality is audited. To achieve a basis for making decisions, some plants are examined with old technologies and the new VSBK technology is compared with these old technologies. The study is assessing whether a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) procedure, i.e., CO2 reduction certification with a Program of Activities (PoA) at the UNFCCC would be worthwhile. It would also be valid to find out why new technologies and the use of hollow bricks are encountering so much resistance.
