Swiss Contribution

Ernst Basler + Partner Switzerland Ltd., Nova Energie Ltd. and Binz Energie am Bau Ltd. have proven, long-term experience in the renewable energy and energy efficiency fields within the building sector. These Swiss partners in Switzerland and Chile are linked very closely with major stakeholders from education/training, construction, communities and national authorities.

Description

The described project will develop and disseminate concrete solutions for the energetic retrofitting of existing Chilean constructions. Four modules are planned:

  • On the basis of pilot renewals, demonstrate appropriate solutions, i.e. adapted to the economic and social frameworks.
  • The refurbishments serve as a basis for specialist, trade and a wide range of events geared towards training professionals in architecture, expert planning and workmanship.
  • A building renovation program is designed for national authorities (Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Planning and Urban Development) which aims at accelerating and improving the energetic retrofitting of Chilean buildings.
  • The results are systematically recorded, evaluated and effectively communicated on a broad scale.

Results

In the sister cities of Coyhaique, Temuco and Vitacura, the planned pilot building renovation projects were selected and the corresponding energy concepts were developed and partly implemented. All projects will be completed in 2019. The necessary training and information documents were developed. By end-2017, various specialized courses and seminars were held; attended by over 200 people. In 2017, there was also an exchange between professors from the University of Bern, Switzerland, and the University of the Frontier (Chile).

Impacts

In addition to providing participants with direct information at the seminars, the topic has aroused much interest and media feedback. The experience gained is directly applied in the Energy City programmes in Chile and Colombia. The Coyhaique municipality has adopted internal guidelines for the construction of schools, which are based on the developed energy concepts. However, the topic of building renovation in Chile is still at the beginning of a long process that must gradually evolve.
