During this project which was completed in July, a new biogas plant (plug-flow digester) was built and put into operation. Organic waste, mainly cattle slurry and cattle manure, from the Mivumoni’s own agricultural operations centre and cloister is fermented into biogas. The biogas can be stored for a short period and is used by the nuns in the cloister for cooking and washing. The remaining digestates are used as a nutrient-rich fertilizer in the farm fields.

A seminar was held with representatives of local companies as well as from agriculture and biogas production networks. This seminar led to a lively knowledge exchange. Since the plant is large enough to supply other parts of the cloister, increasing the operation is feasible. Until then, the plant has to prove itself, especially in the longer term. The project is making an important contribution in the field of biomass and development cooperation, stimulates discussion about such technologies and promotes the exchange of know-how and experience.
