Concluded: Promotion of Hybrid and Electric Buses
This project has been concluded last April. It provides comprehensive documentation on the cost effectiveness and the environmental impact of hybrid and electric buses. A unique feature is the operational data processing from various BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) projects, based on a large number of hybrid and electric buses, etc., used in Bogota, Columbia, and Zhengzhou, China. The detailed documentation clearly shows that 25 – 35% fuel can be saved with conventional hybrid diesel buses and approximately 40% of fuel can be saved with plug-in hybrid concept vehicles.
The comparatively higher cost of conventional diesel buses can be amortized in 5-6 years, although this calls for accompanying financing mechanisms. Electro-battery buses which lead to emissions reduction in polluted urban centres, as well as the greenhouse gas balance sheets are advantages. Due to the small quantities of electric buses sold to date, as well as both the acquisition and operation costs, their efficiency has not yet been achieved. However, the first short-term effect is to advise bus companies on the knowledge gained until now. In the longer term, an increase in the use of hybrid and electric buses is expected, according to the implementation of the findings, combined with a reduction in CO2 and PM/NOx emissions.
