Beschreibung

In Costa Rica, the ICE Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad is already expecting an energy supply shortfall in electricity for 2008. In the short term, new technology is urgently needed for electric power production. Research in Biowaste has shown a huge potential is available in biomass and that by using this valuable renewable energy resource, the additional necessary energy demand can be met. In the Valle Central Biowaste has made work agreements with the Montes de Oca and the Volcafe cooperatives, first contacts have already been made with the interested Perez Zeledon municipality. The government promotes investments in environmental technology.

A feasibility study should present the optimal procedure to further the realization of the first biogas plant by using coffee pulp and other biomass materials. The project's goal will be met by innovative and tested methods from process engineering developed in Switzerland. This process will reduce environmental pollution from both industrial agriculture (coffee cultivation) and local fields (vegetal waste), will be sustainable and through multiplication potential, will derive energy.

Schweizer Beitrag

Following this feasibility study, the market analysis should further develop and the optimal technology procedure as well as the transfer of know-how from Switzerland to Costa Rica shall be defined. Potential Costa Rican partners are already committed.  With the inclusion of the Universidad de Costa Rica another existing network can be used. By signing on the ICE Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad as a possible partner (energy supplier), conditions were met in Costa Rica to found a new company for this project.
