Title

Small Hydro Competence Centre in Indonesia

Project Type

Infrastructure oriented project

Swiss Partner

entec AG , St.Gallen

Technology

Small Hydropower (SHP)

Description

Indonesia has an enormous hydropower potential.  Up to now, power stations in the range of 1 MW have been established. A local industry, specialized in smaller island power plants for the electrification of rural areas has been set up in parallel.  However, the production quality is only sufficient for relatively small output.  Within the range of 100 to 1 000 kilowatts, Indonesia is dependent upon imports which substantially increases the electricity cost price.  At the moment, the project is being prepared and will be promoted with the development of the locally available know-how, through the use of equipment along with the corresponding infrastructure and by means of knowledge transfer.

Industry should be able to have the possibility to test and further develop their products at a planned competence centre.  Training and courses will aid in improving key actors knowledge and facilitate the construction of the local network.  Under the auspices of the Zurich Technology University's hydraulics laboratory, the opportunity exisits to realize a fully functional, state of the art turbine laboratory.

Country

Indonesia

Swiss Contribution

The Zurich Technology University renovated their hydraulics laboratory in the early 1990s; thus permitting students to run their experiments on the hydro-electric generating machines. However, since then the situation has changed due to the decision by the university board to abandon the laboratory. The hydraulics laboratory took up a great deal of space and required regular maintenance and support. There was only one hydropower industry in Switzerland who was taking advantage of this laboratory; so with its limited appeal it was decided to let it go. This is quite different when compared to countries such as Indonesia whose hydropower potential is to a large extent, still waiting to be recognized and used.  Entec AG had the possibility of taking over the entire hydropower laboratory and fittings from the Zurich Technology University, once it is disassembled and removed from the premises.
